Paula Baumann

Paula Baumann joined Prof. Volker Hoffmann’s Group for Sustainability and Technology (SusTec) as a PhD candidate in February 2025. Her research focuses on the policies needed to establish hydrogen value chains in Switzerland and their integration into international markets. Through techno-economic modeling, she compares domestic and import-based hydrogen pathways and evaluates strategic options for Switzerland’s role in global hydrogen markets.

Before joining SusTec, Paula worked at the German Environment Agency on the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in Berlin. Paula holds a MSc and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration from RWTH Aachen University, where she specialized in production technologies and corporate sustainability. Her master’s thesis at ETH Zurich’s Reliability and Risk Engineering Lab explored the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing European hard-to-abate industries.

In her free time, Paula enjoys (vegan) cooking and painting and is a passionate beginner in all kinds of outdoor activities .
