Hydrogen technologies

Addressing climate change requires a profound energy transition. Hydrogen, once limited to a few applications in the energy and chemical industries, is emerging as a promising solution to reduce emissions in sectors like steel, aviation, and long-haul transport. However, technologies for producing, transporting, and using clean hydrogen at scale are still in the early stages of development.

Therefore, innovation policy, technological change, and the dynamics of innovation systems will shape hydrogen's role in the near future. Our research dives deep into the nuances of large-scale hydrogen adoption, its influence on global energy frameworks, and how innovation policies could accelerate it cost-efficiently.

Key Findings:

  • Power-to-Hydrogen can help reduce the last 5-10% of emissions in district-scale multi-energy systems working alongside renewables and batteries, but its role will depend on how heat pumps and battery technologies evolve. (Download Petkov and Gabrielle, 2020)
