The age of the agent: Alejandro Nuñez-Jimenez wins Ambizione fellowship to develop agent-based models for energy systems

Our senior researcher, Alejandro Nuñez-Jimenez, has secured an Ambizione fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Over the next four years, Alejandro will lead a team in developing a modelling framework capable of simulating policies for net-zero emission technologies from a new perspective.

Alejandro Nuñez-Jimenez has been awarded the prestigious SNSF Ambizione fellowship, a grant worth over CHF 800,000, to further his work on energy transition policies. Throughout his career, he has used advanced models to explore solar energy adoption and renewable hydrogen potential.

With this grant, Alejandro will lead the “Zero-AMPS” project, addressing the urgent challenge of accelerating clean energy technologies like renewable hydrogen. These emerging technologies require political support, such as regulations and subsidies, to become competitive. Nuñez-Jimenez plans to use agent-based modeling (ABM) to simulate how companies and industries respond to policy changes, combining this with optimization models to reflect real-world decision-making.

“Our model will help policymakers anticipate both the intended and unintended consequences of different policies,” says Nuñez-Jimenez, aiming to craft more effective policies for net-zero technologies.

Stephan Wagner, Head of D-MTEC, and Volker Hoffmann, Head of SusTec, praised the award and its importance for advancing decarbonization efforts.
