How real are carbon credit emission reductions?

Download Our new study published in Nature Communications conducted the largest systematic assessment of carbon credit quality to date and found that less than 16% of studied carbon credits represent real emission reductions. The analysis of over 60 empirical studies found the climate impact of carbon credits to be substantially overestimated and suggests the need for a fundamental reform of carbon crediting mechanisms for these to make a meaningful contribution to climate change mitigation.
