What influences the deployment of mechanical and chemical plastic recycling technologies?

Our new study, published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, reveals how technical trade-offs and value chain configurations shape the deployment of mechanical, solvent-based, and chemical recycling technologies in the European automotive sector.

In this Download study, we identify five key parameters – feedstock quality, input quantity, carbon footprint, economic performance, and output quality – that are central for technology deployment, highlighting the strengths and drawbacks of each recycling method. However, these parameters alone are not enough. They need to be considered alongside value chain configurations and developments.  By examining the European automotive sector, the study reveals how these factors collectively shape the deployment of recycling technologies. Furthermore, the findings stress the need to understand value chains to leverage technology complementarities in response to societal and environmental needs.
