Conference Track on Sustainable Innovation in R&D Management Conference
SusTec researchers Jenni, Sophie, and Lucas hosted a conference track on sustainable innovation beyond firm boundaries at the annual R&D Management Conference in Pisa on 01 July 2025.

In chairing the track, the SusTec team combined their research streams of circular economy and innovation ecosystems in two sessions exploring shifting industry architectures and sector coupling aimed at innovation for sustainability. During the two sessions, five researchers presented promising manuscripts to the audience and received in-depth feedback for revisions before submitting their work to a journal.
Three key themes became apparent during the discussion:
1) Electrification is the leading play for sector coupling and decarbonization of the energy system.
2) The empirical case set across track submissions is consistent in showing how bottom-up action through local initiatives can drive real-world impact.
3) Public organizations like authorities and research institutions play a crucial role in the early phases of sustainable innovation.
The team thanks their supervisor, Prof. Dr. Volker Hoffmann, for his guidance and support during the preparation of the track.
