SusTec co-organized a multi-stakeholder webinar on the upcoming Plastics Treaty Negotiations (INC5.2)

SusTec’s Ricarda Fieber co-organized a global, multi-stakeholder dialogue in preparation for the final round of Plastic Treaty Negotiations (INC5.2), exploring stakeholder priorities and challenges to achieve a meaningful outcome. The perspectives represented include international law, government, science, civil society and business.

In August 2025, UN Member States unite in Geneva to conclude negotiations on a global, legally binding plastics treaty at the second part of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop a global legally binding plastics treaty (INC-5.2)

.In preparation, SusTec PhD Candidate Ricarda co-organized and moderated a 90-minute webinar on July 10th as online side-event for the external page WRF25 Conference. The webinar consisted of input presentations and a moderated panel discussion to provide particularly:

  • Insights on the current state of the treaty negotiation process
  • Stakeholder’s content priorities ahead of INC-5.2)
  • Key challenges and solution pathways for achieving a meaningful treaty package at INC5.2

In total, the seven panelists covered different perspectives (International Law, Government, Science, Civil Society, Business), speaking from different global regions (Africa, Europe, South-East Asia, Latin America). The speakers included were:

  • International law: Dr. iur., LLM.Eur. Karine Siegwart (Senior Policy Advisor at the Centre for Policy and Law, IUCN; Head of Delegation for IUCN in the Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations)
  • Government:
    •  Amanda Finger (Senior Policy Advisor, Federal Office for the Environment FOEN; Circular Economy Specialist of the Swiss delegation in the Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations)
    •  Dr. Sam Adu-Kumi (Executive Director, Environment Youth Action Network/EnviroHealth Consult; National and Regional Expert (Chemicals and Waste) for Ghana and Africa; and Lead Negotiator Ghana in the Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations)
  • Science: Prof. Dr. Kristian Syberg (Professor at Roskilde University/Head of Section - Environmental Dynamics; Member of the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty)
  • Civil Society:
    • Marian Frances T. Ledesma (Zero Waste Campaigner at Greenpeace Southeast Asia – Philippines)
    • Dalia Fernanda Márquez Añez (Co-Chair for Women's Major Group at UNEP; Executive Director Juventud Unida en Acción; Coordinator of Women's Working Group on ending plastic pollution)
  • Business:
    •  Jodie Roussell (Global Public Affairs Lead, Packaging & Sustainability, Nestlé, and Co-Chair, Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty.
