Researchers from SusTec and the Energy Politics Group (EPG) have identified and analyzed the most prevalent use cases for stationary battery technologies on mainland and island electricity systems.

They find that there is a large variation in battery storage projects today, in terms of the technology used, applications served and geographies, and that policies play a central role in determining the viability of battery technologies. They identify six most prevalent use cases and present them in detail.
Their findings are based on literature review, analyses of a database of battery installations and interviews with industry and academia experts.
