The results from econometric analyses suggest that patenting increases new entrants' number of open innovation relationships, on average. However, this effect is greatly influenced by the technology intensity of relationships. While patenting strongly enables technology-intensive relationships, it is less important for relationships that are weaker in technology intensity and even inhibits relationships that score very low on technology intensity.
